I was unable to connect to my VPN-server at home. It turned out\u00a0this was caused by a\u00a0<em>device missing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The moment I would try to connect via VPN, Windows\u00a0would try to comply, but fail in the end with some error message.<\/p>\n<p>Before trying to connect via VPN, there would be no problematic devices listed in Hardware Manager. But afterwards, several <em>miniport<\/em> devices would be listed as such. Generally it was reported that the required drivers could not be loaded.<\/p>\n<p>Investigation lead me to the <a href=\"https:\/\/social.technet.microsoft.com\/Forums\/windows\/en-US\/df23faf4-2811-47cd-ae33-f433ed6f3fbd\/vpn-not-working-missing-device?forum=w8itpronetworking\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Support Forum<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ol>\n<li>In Device Manager, right-click on the non-working miniport, choose <strong><em>Update Driver<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose <strong><em>Browse my computer<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the next window, choose <strong><em>Let me pick driver from a list<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Uncheck <strong><em>Show compatible hardware<\/em><\/strong>. From the <strong><em>Manufacturer<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0list, choose <strong><em>Microsoft<\/em><\/strong>, and from the <strong><em>Network Adapter<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0list, choose <strong><em>Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)<\/em><\/strong>. (It can be any device the user is allowed to uninstall.)<\/li>\n<li>Back in the device manager, delete the device that just turned into a <strong><em>Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Reboot.<\/li>\n<li>Delete your VPN information and then enter it again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>(repeat for all problematic miniport devices)<\/p>\n<p>This solved things for me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I experienced a new kind of problem with Windows 8.1 on my laptop.
